MIM’s Hip-Hop Exhibit THIS SATURDAY feat. Such & Champ Styles

MIM’s Hip Hop exhibit offers an exciting look at this influential American musical genre. Two video monitors feature such notable innovators as Grandmaster Flash, Grand Mixer D.ST., Mix Master Mike, and DJ QBert as well as break-dancers and MCs. Instruments include two Technics turntables, a Gemini mixer, a Roland drum machine, an E-MU sampler, and a Vestax QFO designed and loaned to MIM by DJ QBert. Important “break beat” records are presented alongside a B-Boy outfit complete with Kangol hat, Adidas track suit and shoes, rope chains, and JVC boom box. Photography by Martha Cooper while a custom graffiti backdrop by local aerosol Graf-Father Such and his son Champ Styles colorfully recalls the New York City subway system as a key part of hip hop’s early days.

Tom GreyEyes Makes Sculptures from Trash on San Carlos Apache Reservation

Having personally seen them myself (and fallen into them), there are tremendous piles of incinerated/buried trash reservations throughout Arizona. Tom GreyEyes has made site-specific sculptures out of these piles of trash. With all cliches aside, it just goes to show that one person’s trash is another person’s art.

Tom has also been nominated in Phoenix New Time’s “Artistic Endeavors” contest in the “Urban” section. The winner will earn a spot in a gallery show hosted by Chambord.
