Street Tour ~ Grand Ave & Polk St.

Last September I posted this article about the alley on Grand Ave & Polk St. and the Chicano art produced there. The walls have received a lot more work since then from such artists as Francisco Garcia, Francisco Guerrero and Edgar Fernandez.

Jetsonorama on the Navajo Nation

Chip Thomas moved to the Navajo Nation in Shonto, AZ as an Indian Health Service Physician since 1987. Since then, he has photographed the community where he lives and works. In June of 2009, Thomas began creating large scale wheat paste installations out of his photographs on the reservation, reflecting the people and culture he has intimately come to know. Remarkably, in 1992, Thomas and a three other cyclists took a transcontinental bike ride across Africa, from the Northernmost tip (Bizerte, Tunisia), to the Southernmost point (Cape Aghulas, South Africa), earning them a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Check out these two interviews below to learn more about Chip and his work–

You can also view his photography at his website and check out his personal blog here.

Paper Heart Gallery ~ Central

The Paper Heart was a music venue and art gallery on Grand Avenue between 7th Avenue and Polk St. in downtown Phoenix. It closed in December of 2007. Since then, the inside has become dilapidated and a nice abandoned building for the homeless to find shelter in. I ventured inside and became disappointed that more artists had not taken advantage of this forgotten space.
